How long should you hold on to a birthday card before throwing it away?

I'm not one to hold on to things as keepsakes, but when someone sends me a card, I feel I HAVE to keep it for awhile. I'm sure if you were a scrapbooker, you'd hold on to it for eternity. How long should I be obligated to keep it before throwing it away and still have a clean conscience?

How long should you hold on to a birthday card before throwing it away?
I think we all have to be more selective, or our houses will end up overflowing with cards! :) What's important is the sentiment behind the card, not the card itself. As long as you remember the person and what they mean to you, a piece of paper isn't that important.

What I do is, if the card has a really great personal message written on it, makes me really happy, or commemorates something really special (e.g., that long-sought-after promotion, birth of a child), then I keep it. If it's just for Christmas or a routine birthday card, I chuck it after reading and enjoying the card. I do make a note to myself to send a card to that person on their birthday, but I don't feel the need to hang on to a piece of paper forever. I do the throwing away right away, so I don't end up building up a big mess.
Reply:I don't throw mine away either. It's a reminder of the people who care for me. Sometimes I go back and look at them, most times I don't though. But I think that ultimately it's your decision. If you don't want to keep, what are the chances that the person who sent it to you is ever going to know?

I would keep it for a month or so, but after that, trash it.
Reply:I keep all of mine that are from my family and loved ones.
Reply:I try to keep it forever..
Reply:I hang on to family cards...from my daughter especially. I also hang on to those tear jerking hallmarks from family and friends..all the rest go to trash can after I take them down from my mantle where I display them for a week.
Reply:ive thrown mine away the same day i got it.
Reply:i try to preserve it forever! only when there is sun, u will realize the importance of shade...small things in life has to b appreciated though they might not b of any monetary benefit. u wil realize the imprtance of it only when a person who had sent u card earlier fails to send one this time!! there is no obligation for u to keep it for a specific period of time or forever, but u should do it willingly and not bcos they have been sent by ur wellwishers.
Reply:I never threw away mine but if you don't care for it that much you should just keep it in a box.
Reply:I usually keep mine for about a week. I'll keep cards that might have new addresses or phone numbers and cards from VERY special people.

But then, after a while (spring cleaning) they end up in the pal anyway. It's all in what you feel comfortable with and if the person who's card you're debating about throwing away will get offended, keep it... put it away, then it might turn into an out of sight out of mind thing. I guess it's all in your comfort level.
Reply:How can you ever think of throwing a card .Rem it was gifted out of love n care by tht person to u:) You urself can preserve ur memories avour them :) its not everyday in our life tht we recieve the blessings of others:)
Reply:it depends who give it to me
Reply:My answer is never. That card is too show how much that person cares about you, if you throw it out youreally did care as much or for that person as that person does for you!
